Support Development of Diverse Housing
Miami Beach’s changing demographic includes an influx of young, talented and community mined people who desire to establish a life and build a family In Miami Beach. These people will form the future generations of residents and property owners here. They will become part of the life blood of our growing city. We need to encourage the development of housing that is affordable for these new residents; while at the same time maintaining a balance with our rich Art Deco and Preservationist Heritage. Rules and development regulations rightly instituted in previous decades might need to be reviewed to determine their effectiveness regarding today’s changing housing needs; for example Parking Impact Fees should go to creating parking not into a black hole.
The CANDO Project in the Collins Park Area is a prime example of how the city working with the private sector can accomplish fostering more diverse housing. We need look at how the city can work with developers and property owners to create partnerships that will build additional parking around the city; this enable the re-development of existing properties while keeping housing cost down. Parking Impact Fees that rarely go to creating parking only foster more expensive housing without ever increasing the available parking.
A comprehensive development plan, in conjunction with innovative development partnerships throughout the city, will result in housing that is more affordable for everyone interested in calling Miami Beach home.
